The Cog "Thomas" was the flagship of the English fleet during the Battle of Sluis in 1340. Victory secured English naval supremacy during the Hundred Years' War. The battle between the English fleets took place in the harbour of the trading city of Bruges in West Flanders. 250 English ships under the command of King Edward III defeated several hundred ships of the French fleet under the command of Admiral Hugues Quirje. Cogs were used as merchant and military vessels from in the 10th-14th centuries. These ships carried a single mast with 150-200 m² sail area.
