The most numerous and famous French armoured vehicle was the AMD-35. It was designed by the Panhard Company as a reconnaissance vehicle for cavalry. Its serial production was launched in 1934. It was named Panhard 178. These vehicles had a rear engine and all-wheel drive. Their main armament was a 25mm anti-tank gun. 551 vehicles were produced up to 1940.
