The most common all-wheel drive 6-wheel Soviet Army truck of the 1980s had a diesel engine and a cab-over-engine layout. Its production began in 1981 at the plant in Naberezhnye Chelny. The car featured strong reliability and all-road ability. The base model was designed primarily for the transportation of personnel and cargo up to 6 tons.

The car is now in service with the the armies of Russia, Ukraine and other countries. There were many 6-wheel cab-over truck modifications for the Soviet Army and civilian use. In 1989, an improved model 101 was released, and was followed by model 114 in 1996. Its production at the Kama Automobile Plant is still ongoing.
