The Renault Type AG-1 car was launched in 1907 (following on from 1905's Type AG) and was designed to be used as a taxi. Due to their strength and reliability, from 1908 to 1914 the model became the most popular Parisian taxi, with more than 2,000 being in service. On September 5th, 1914, some 1,300 Parisian Renault AG-1 taxis were used by the French army to transport 6,000 soldiers from Paris to the Battle of the Marne, where the French troops stopped the German offensive. These Parisian taxis earned the nickname “Taxi de la Marne”, with the French saying the taxi had saved Paris during World War I.
